Today we learned about one of the 4 search engine tools : Search engines. Comparing search engines to databases, search engines contains much, much more sites than a database has. In the database, the web pages that are connected to the keyword are selected virtually. Search engines are mostly used for searching, not browsing, so they provide more web pages to look at. Search engines provide more substantial searching capabilities than the directories.
Actually, we didn't learn about the 4 different types of search tools but rather the 4 differnt types of Internet search tools which are:

2) metasearch engines
3) subject guides/Web directories
4) specialty search tools/Databases
We haven't learned about databases yet so what you are calling a database is actually a directory.
Databases and subject guides are my favorites because the information is peer reviewed and hand picked.
