Today we learned about citing online resources using the MLA citation format. When doing a research paper for a class you need to give credit to your sources by citing them in the correct format. Even if your research does not have to do with school, you should still cite your sources so you can go back and find it later. You should cite your sources in a well known citation format, for example, the MLA format and the ALA format. The MLA format and the ALA format are different kinds of style formats for all Internet information. For all academic work, you should always check with your instructor about the type of citation format they want.

Blog#2: 12/14/10

Today we learned about analyzing our search results in Google. First, when you search a keyword in the Google search engine, you should look for a website that you think will be very useful to you. The search egine usually offers clues that can help you find the useful website for your research. Search engines always have your keyword highlighted in the results it come up with in the little snippet or in the actualy URL. The number of times your keywords appear on each results NOT DONE!

12/13/10 : Blog #1

Ive learned that when you need to construct a search with more than one keywords, you need to put them in quotation marks in order to create a effective search. For example, if you put blueberry pancakes in a search engine, sometimes the results won"t come up as only blueberry pancakes. The results can come up with blueberry waffles or buttermilk pancakes. But if you put blueberry pancakes quotation marks ("blueberry pancakes") then the search engine will know that its looking for websites that include the words blueberry pancakes together. In result, you will receive a search that includes information on blueberry pancakes and that's it.

Blog #1: 12/07/10 How do we refine our searches with phrase searching?

When creating a search with one or more keywords, you might need to make it into a phrase because it might not give you the results you want. For example, if you type in the words "Japanese" and "Government" you would conduct a search with results containing only the words "Japanese" and "Government" in it. The results might show up with something about the Japanese language, or the American government, but you want search results about the Japanese Government. So, in order to create a search that will give you results about the Japanese Government is by typing the words "Japanese Government" in the search  box.

Blog#2: 11/30/10

How is the information you learned applicable to your other class assignments? How is this class helping you with research in your other classes?


Today we learned about wonder wheels and how they are useful. Knowing about the wonder wheel helps make researching broad topics, like music, crime, etc. easier to research because the wonder wheel gives us sub topics about the broad topic so we can learn a little about what the topic is about. The wonder wheel is a wheel where a topic will be in the middle and there would be subcategories that relate to the main topic shooting out of the circle in the middle. This will make researching topics in other classes easier because if we have to research a topic that we know nothing about the wonder wheel will help us learn a little about the topic by giving us the main ideas that are related to the topic.
